Poland: a student visa, where it is applied for and what to check

Studying in Poland needs a national visa, and extending your stay afterwards happens inside the country and at a different authority. Here is who is responsible for which step and where the requirements are published.
What you need to do
First: study needs a national visa, not a Schengen one. A Schengen visa gives a short stay and is not meant for study; travelling on one to "sort it out on the spot" is a wasted trip.
Second: the application goes to the Polish consulate serving your place of residence, through its appointment system. Appointments and the list of documents are published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — not by an agent or a visa centre that "has slots".
Third, and this is regularly missed: the visa ends before the studies do. After that the stay is extended inside Poland, at the voivodeship office, and a different authority handles it — not the consulate. The extension is applied for before the permit expires, not after.
Where the official answers live
- The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs — its visa section: types, appointment procedure, requirements.
- The Office for Foreigners — what to do after arrival: residence permit, extension, change of grounds.
- Study in Poland — the state portal for international applicants: how admission and studying are arranged.
How to check that the requirement has not changed
Check the list on your own consulate's page rather than on the general portal: a general rule neither overrides a consular requirement nor replaces it.
On timing: look not only at the day you apply but at the processing time — it can be longer than it seems, and it is what decides when to start. Timings and fees for Poland are in the facts on the country page, with a link and the date they were checked.
And separately: nobody but the consulate can provide paid "fast-tracking". If it is promised, the promise comes from someone who does not make the decision.
