Poland: NAWA calls and their calendar

Public scholarships for foreigners in Poland are announced by NAWA, the academic exchange agency, as separate calls for an academic year. Here is how that calendar works.

One agency, many programmes

NAWA is the state agency for academic exchange. It is the body that announces programmes for foreign students, and on its site they are sorted by who they address: separately for foreigners, separately for Polish students, separately for researchers.

That is the first thing to check in any announcement: who the programme is addressed to. Half the lines on the agency's site are not about an applicant from abroad.

A calendar by academic years

Calls are announced for a particular academic year and then close. The site shows both the current offer and closed calls from previous years — useful for understanding the rules and dangerous for deadlines: it is easy to read last year's conditions and apply by them.

So the order is simple:

  1. Find the offer section for the academic year you need.
  2. Open the call for applications itself, not a retelling.
  3. Read the information for applicants — the agency keeps it on a separate page.

Applying separately from admission

An agency call and university admission are two different processes with different deadlines. A scholarship does not mean enrolment, and enrolment does not mean a scholarship; nor are the deadlines guaranteed to coincide, so plan on applying twice.

What else exists

Besides the agency's programmes, money sits with universities themselves and with cooperation programmes between countries. They are announced by whoever pays — and that is where to look for them, not in general roundups.
