Poland: how to check the university, and what else to look at there

What you need to do

The state portal for international candidates is the first address, not a reference one. It gathers recognised institutions, admission conditions for foreigners and the visa side — that is, answers normally looked for in three different places.

The second official address is the national agency for academic exchange. Its students' section answers what the portal does not: recognition of the entry qualification and the support programmes.

The order is: first confirm the institution and the programme exist officially, then establish what is required of your particular document, and only then look at scholarships. The reverse order leads to choosing a programme your qualification does not fit.

Why recognition is a separate step here

The Polish route is built so that a qualification from outside the country is not always recognised automatically. Some documents need a separate statement, and that same statement may be needed for the student visa.

Which means recognition is not a formality after admission but a condition of admission itself. And it is the agency's site to ask, not the university's: the university applies the rule, it does not set it.

What goes wrong

People look only at the institution. Recognition of the document and recognition of the university are different checks, and the second does not replace the first.

The recognition statement is left for later. It may be required for the visa — that is, before arrival, not after enrolment.

Programmes are searched on aggregators. An aggregator shows what was paid for. The state portal shows what exists.

How to check the requirement is still current

Conditions for foreigners are set by the higher education act and change not every year, but they change. Check both state addresses rather than retellings: in retellings last year's rule lives a long time.
