Italy: where the official answers live

Applying to an Italian university goes through one state portal, and school-leaving qualifications are recognised under an international convention. Here is which source answers what, and how to check a requirement without relying on summaries.
What you need to do
Admission to Italy is built around a single state portal. Programmes are published there, the application of an international candidate is submitted there, and preliminary recognition of a school qualification is requested there as well. Individual universities add their own steps, but the starting point is the same for everyone.
Recognition of your school-leaving qualification is settled in parallel. Italy is a party to the Lisbon Convention, and its principle is plain: a foreign qualification grants the same rights it grants in the country that issued it. This is not a formality — recognition decides which programmes you are entitled to apply for.
Where this is stated officially
- Universitaly — the state application portal for international candidates, including the dates of the current intake.
- Your Europe — a summary of university admission requirements across the union, Italy included: what a country must recognise and what stays with the university.
How to check the requirement is still current
Italian intake dates shift every year, so the date matters more than the wording. Open the portal and find the page for the current intake rather than last year's instructions. If a university asks for more than the portal does, its requirement neither cancels nor replaces the state one — you will have to satisfy both.
Specific amounts, fees and deadlines for Italy are collected in the facts on the country page, each with a source link and a verification date. An expired fact is not shown at all, so that an outdated figure cannot look current.
