Italy: how to check the university and the programme

What you need to do

The state portal Universitaly plays two roles at once: it is the directory of recognised institutions and programmes, and it is the channel through which an international candidate completes pre-enrolment. The second does not exist without the first — pre-enrolment is made for a programme that is in the system.

So checking and applying are not separate jobs here but one route. If a programme is not in the system, the question is not how to apply but whether this is the right programme.

The second official address is the foreign ministry portal Study in Italy: it gathers the conditions for international students, the competitions and the visa side. It answers what the register does not: what is required of a foreigner beyond the fact of admission.

What to look at on a programme's card

1. Level. Bachelor, master, single cycle — this decides which entry qualification is needed and what recognition it will require.
2. Language. A programme in English does not remove the country's language: you will need it for daily life, for a side job and for part of the procedures.
3. City. It determines not only life but the regional agency where a scholarship is filed.
4. Presence in the pre-enrolment system. If the programme cannot be selected there, that is a signal, not a technical hitch.

What goes wrong

People pick a programme on the university's site and look for it in the system afterwards. The right order is the reverse: first see the programme in the state system, then read about it at the university.

Pre-enrolment is taken for admission. They are different steps: pre-enrolment opens the visa route, enrolment is done by the university.

People miss that pre-enrolment is tied to one choice. Changing it later is a separate procedure with its own deadlines, not an edit to a form.

How to check the requirement is still current

Pre-enrolment deadlines are set for each academic year separately and published at those same two addresses. Last year's date found in a retelling does not work here.
