Hall of residence or private rental: what actually decides it

The choice is settled not by price but by three properties: when to apply, whether the address can be confirmed, and what happens if plans change. Here is each of them.

What you need to do

Comparing a hall of residence with a private rental on price is pointless: they differ not in price but in how they fit into every other procedure. Three properties decide it.

When to apply. In several countries a place in a hall is requested during registration for admission — that is, months before the move and inside someone else's system. Miss the window and the matter is closed until the next intake. A private rental has no window, but no guarantee either.

Whether the address can be confirmed. A hall confirms an address by default. A private rental does so only if the landlord is willing; that question is asked before signing, not after.

What happens if plans change. A hall is tied to student status: stop being a student and you usually lose the place. A rental is not tied to status, but rests on a contract and a deposit.

Why the address matters more than the price

A confirmed address is what your residence permit depends on, often your bank account and your insurance. Saving on housing that cannot confirm an address means stalling every procedure that depends on it — a question of deadlines, not comfort.

So the first question for either option is the same: will I be able to register at this address.

What goes wrong

Only the monthly payment is compared. Outside the payment sit the deposit, housing insurance, a guarantor and agency fees — together they often decide more.

The hall is not requested in time. In some countries the request is made inside the admission system rather than by a separate letter, and once the application closes it cannot be added.

People rent remotely without a contract. Prepaying for housing you have not seen is the classic scheme the universities themselves warn about.

Where this is stated officially

  • Your Europe — residence documents and formalities: why a confirmed address is needed.
  • Trouver un logement (Crous) — France's state student housing system: an example of wave allocation.
  • Study in Poland — the state portal: conditions for international students, accommodation included.

How to check the requirement is still current

The registration window and the list of documents are set by the local administration, not by the country as a whole. Look for your city's page.

Deadlines and amounts by country are collected below, each with its source and verification date.
