France: how student housing works

State student residences are allocated in waves, and getting into the first one is a matter of date, not luck. Here is how the queue works and what to do if you miss a wave.

What you need to do

Student housing in France is allocated by a state network, and the application goes through its own portal. Alongside it sits a student services account through which other applications run, including the social file.

The system's defining feature is wave allocation. There are fewer places than applicants, and the order of application decides what you will be offered at all. It is not «first come» but «who applied within their window»: someone late for the first wave lands in the second, where the choice is markedly smaller.

From which follows a simple rule: you need to know the opening date before you have your admission. Admission and housing run on different calendars and do not wait for each other.

How this connects to the rest of the paperwork

An address is needed for more than living. It is needed for the residence permit, often for a bank account and for arranging social insurance. So housing that cannot confirm an address closes several following steps at once.

When looking at private rentals this is the first question, not the last: is the landlord willing to confirm that you live at that address.

What goes wrong

People wait for admission and then look for housing. By then the first wave is usually closed.

People apply to a single residence. The system is wave-based: your chances come from the number of options in the application, not the appeal of one.

A hall of residence is assumed simpler than a private rental in every way. It is simpler on paperwork and guarantees, but limited in places and filing dates.

People rent without confirmation of address. Cheaper — and dearer: without it every procedure that depends on it stalls.

Where this is stated officially

  • Trouver un logement (Crous) — the state portal for searching and applying for student housing.
  • MesServices.etudiant.gouv.fr — the student services account: the social file and related applications.

How to check the requirement is still current

Wave dates are announced for each academic year and published at those same state addresses. Last year's date from a blog is useless here.

Deadlines and amounts for the country are collected below, each with its source and verification date.

Amounts and deadlines are not copied into the article text: every figure here carries its own primary source and its own verification date. Expired ones are not shown.
