Low costs, DSU scholarships and an easy language to learn
Tuition is calculated from family income and is often close to zero. DSU scholarships cover housing and meals, and Italian is quick to pick up for Romanian and Russian speakers.
An editor's mark: without these lines someone from Moldova will trip up — for example, because they are not an EU citizen. It does not mean the rest does not concern them.

Do not treat an Italian university's acceptance as a visa already granted
Preliminary acceptance by a university confers no right to a visa, and the final decision is taken by the consulate alone — two different bodies, two different decisions. The temptation to think otherwise is strong: acceptance looks like the main hurdle, after which only formalities remain. We advise assembling the visa file in parallel with the university application rather than after acceptance, and treating the consular stage as a separate assessment with its own requirements, not as the issuing of a paper that follows enrolment.

Prepare the Italian scholarship application before you arrive, not after you move in
A DSU scholarship is applied for at the agency of the region where the university sits, and the window falls in summer — that is, while the candidate is still at home and busy with the visa. There are two requirements, economic and academic, and the papers for the first are not gathered in a day. We hold that the scholarship calendar must be established alongside the admission calendar, not after it: arriving to learn that the window closed a month ago is the ordinary way to lose a year of funding while fully entitled to it.

Plan your first week in Italy before you fly: the permit clock runs from entry
The deadline for filing a residence permit is counted in working days from entry, not from the day you found housing and got your bearings. Registration with the commune is a separate step after that, and it is not instant either. We advise establishing the post office address and the list of papers in advance, while still at home: the one resource in short supply that week is the week itself, and spending it looking things up means missing the deadline.

Some answers are not on this page and cannot be: recognition of your certificate and the apostille are done at home, while the visa code, processing deadlines and Erasmus+ are the same in all five countries.
